Out-of-State Students

Welcome to Texas State!

You are embarking on the next exciting chapter in your life: settling down in a new state! We are glad you chose Texas State University and San Marcos as your new home for the next few years! Learning about a new place is fun, but it also comes with some challenges. We hope you will find the answers to your questions here. Feel free to contact us in the Center for Student Retention if you need anything else at 512-245-5500. We are located on the corner of N. LBJ and University Drive, in the historic yellow house.

Arts and Culture

San Marcos is full of art, music and festivals, usually within walking distance of campus. If live music is your thing, San Marcos has performances almost every day at local venues. Check out the daily Sounds of San Marcos schedule!

To see local art, check out the Art Squared Art Market, held on the second Saturday of each month March-December. There are also many art galleries and museums.

Texas State students have a lot of talent to showcase as well, right here on campus. Art, photography, dance, theatre and music exhibitions happen all year long. For a full calendar of events see their Texas State Presents webpage.

The Outdoors

If you love the outdoors, San Marcos is a great place to be! With the crystal clear San Marcos River running through campus, there are endless opportunities to jump right in-- and that's exactly what students do on graduation day! The River is a huge part of the culture here, so you'll definitely want to go tubing, kayaking or paddle boarding.

Our Outdoor Center offers equipment rentals, clinics, and organized group trips. Join them to explore all the Texas Hill Country has to offer!

Some other popular outdoor destinations a short drive from Texas State: Reimer's Ranch, Enchanted Rock, Lake Travis, Jacob's Well, and Hamilton Pool.

If you are on campus, there are plenty of dining options available to you. For hours, locations, and daily dining hall menus visit Texas State's Dine On Campus website.

Texas, and specifically San Marcos, has many delicious foods known to this area. Authentic Mexican food and Tex-Mex cuisine are some of the best in the country, as well as Texas BBQ cooked all day in a smoker.

Get Involved

Crowds of students and student organization tents

The best way to get new experiences here in Texas and settle in is to do activities with other people! Join an organization on campus that interests you to create a support system that will challenge you and discover with you. Browse through all of our student organizations and come to the Student Involvement Fair to learn more in person.

You can also get involved in the San Marcos community through volunteering! The city keeps an updated list of volunteering opportunities on their website. Student Involvement also offers many service opportunities, including a Volunteer Fair and Bobcat Build, an annual campus-wide service initiative.
